I returned to my office after sharing one last drink with DT. It had been a long tough puzzle to solve and, like so many of them, didn't arrive with a paying client I could charge at the end of the day. I checked my e-mail and smiled. It was a purchase order. DT had contacted her Hollywood client and explained to him that, with a little bit of effort, she could create a program that would let his computer not only call her computer and the computers of all his friends, but might even form the basis of a new sitcom in which families of computers all call each other, with occasional interruptions from the crazy old Atari next door. As soon as the executive heard that she was developing a program, he didn't seem to care what she had to say. He cut a P.O. on the spot, and DT was subcontracting with me to get the dialing software to work. |
